War, peace and cannabis in Europe

The European Union could supply medical cannabis to Ukraine. This was confirmed late last year by the country's Deputy Minister of Health, Maryna Slobodnichenko.
In mid-November 2024, Ukraine will regulate its medical cannabis law by publishing a list of diseases eligible for treatment with cannabis derivatives. However, the country is not yet in a position to launch a large-scale industry to produce these products, as its economy is in critical condition after more than three years of war with Russia.
It is not surprising that, in a context of high stress and extreme tension among its population, caused by the current war, the relaxing therapeutic properties of cannabis, and especially CBD, are seen as a good alternative for treating many anxiety, stress, and other psychological disorders among the Ukrainian population.
Given this situation, the European Union would be responsible for supplying drugs for therapeutic use. This was confirmed by the country's Deputy Minister of Health, Maryna Slobodnichenko, in an article published by the state news agency.
"The European Union is very pleased with our progress in this area," Slobodnichenko said of the recent enactment of the medical cannabis law in Ukraine. She then added that "they have medical cannabis warehouses that they are willing to supply to us. But we are talking about medicines, and therefore the consumer is not just any person, but patients suffering from clearly defined diseases," the deputy health minister said.
The fact that the European Union is supplying Ukraine with cannabis-derived medicines is a new rapprochement between the country and the continental bloc, an issue that Russia rejects, and for this reason, among others, it decided to launch the invasion in February 2022.
In any case, Ukraine plans to create a national system for the production of medicinal cannabis for its population. To achieve this, a licensing system will be created, which "will soon be reviewed by the Cabinet of Ministers," Slobodnichenko explained. "The entire circulation chain of medicinal cannabis, from import or cultivation to dispensing to the patient in the pharmacy, will be subject to licensing control," said the Deputy Minister of Health.
This is still good news, regarding the recognition and implementation of therapeutic cannabis in Europe, but without a doubt, the best news of all would be for the war in Ukraine to end and for peace to prevail over the injustice and barbarism that any armed conflict represents.
